If your GoDaddy renewal email made you wince, you are in very large company. GoDaddy is the world’s biggest registrar — over 80 million domains — and its .com renewal of $22.99 sits at a markup of about 120% over the $10.44 wholesale cost. Before you pay it again, work through these seven options. The first one does most of the saving.
Why GoDaddy renewals cost so much
Three reasons: brand (Super Bowl ads are not free), bundled support infrastructure, and a business model built on add-ons — paid WHOIS privacy upgrades, email packages, security suites — layered onto the renewal. None of these make your domain work better. A domain renewed at Porkbun resolves identically to one renewed at GoDaddy.
The 7 ways to pay less
1. Transfer the domain out (saves ~$12/yr, every year)
The nuclear option, and the right one for most people. Transferring to Cloudflare ($10.44/yr) or Porkbun ($11.08/yr) costs one year at the new price, and that year is added to your expiry — you lose nothing you have paid for. Do it at least 30 days before expiry; transfers take 5–7 days. Full walkthrough in our transfer vs renewal guide.
2. Strip the add-ons before renewal day
Log in and audit what is actually set to renew: domains you no longer use, privacy upgrades, expiring email trials that convert to paid, website-builder plans from 2022. GoDaddy carts accumulate silent passengers. Cancel what you don’t recognise the value of.
3. Turn off auto-renew on domains you might drop
Portfolio owners: mark the keepers, switch the maybes to manual. A forgotten $22.99 × 6 domains is real money for names you will never build on.
4. Consolidate scattered domains
Domains spread across GoDaddy, a host and an old registrar each renew at different (high) rates. Moving everything to one flat-price registrar makes renewals predictable and bulk management trivial.
5. Use transfer promotions and Black Friday
Renewal coupons at GoDaddy are rare by design, but transfer deals at competing registrars are common — especially in late November, when .com transfers have dropped to around $10.45. Time your move for late November, when the transfer deals land.
6. Ask support for a retention discount — once
GoDaddy support can sometimes apply a discount when you say you are transferring out. It costs one chat to ask. If the answer is no, you have lost nothing: proceed with option 1.
7. If you stay, renew multi-year before price rises
Verisign’s scheduled wholesale increases (up to 7% a year through 2030) will push all .com prices up. If you insist on staying, a multi-year renewal at least freezes today’s rate — though at $22.99, even frozen, it loses to transferring.
Leaving GoDaddy in 10 minutes, safely
- In GoDaddy: unlock the domain and turn off any transfer lock; request the authorisation (EPP) code.
- At the new registrar: start the transfer, paste the code, pay the one-year fee.
- Approve the confirmation email. Wait 5–7 days — your website and email keep working throughout, because your DNS records carry over.
- Verify the new expiry date shows the added year, then set calendar reminders — 30, 7 and 1 day out — for the next cycle.
Two cautions: a domain cannot transfer within 60 days of registration or a previous transfer (an ICANN rule), and if fewer than 7 days remain before expiry, renew once at GoDaddy first, then transfer — never race an expiry.
